7th graders work with Mr. Wilson (Science), Mrs.Glode (Art) and teaching artist, Kate Hartley to relate personality traits to plants and trees that are native to the Adirondacks.
Students begin by completing a brief survey to choose words that most resemble their personalities (how they act, make choices and interact with others in most situations). Led by Mr. Wilson, students and teachers talk about the words - sensitive, strong, alert, dependent etc. - and what plants from their region could depict those personality traits.
For example, lichens or moss could exhibit the trait of being dependent. Or, butterfly weed could relate to someone who is alert.
Students are also asked to consider their future selves, what might life hold for them in 10, 15 or 20 years? Would they still be in school and if so, what careers might lead them to a long-term commitment to schooling? Would they be married? Would they be parents?
Students begin to look through several reference books and on the computer for images of plants they've discussed. They will choose a plant to represent their personality, and will paint it - exploring a variety of styles - along with a "vessel" they've chosen to represent their childhood experiences. Their resulting work will be a painting that depicts the student as they see their past, present, and future selves.
